Your residential fence is one of the first features of your property that people see when they approach your home. It enhances your curb appeal, provides security, and helps identify your property line. However, when your fence is not looking its best, it can do the opposite of these things. Check for these five signs that will let you know that it’s time to replace your fence.
Cracked and Broken Boards
If your fence old, you might have noticed that some of your boards are broken or cracked. There are a number of factors over the years that have probably contributed to this, including pests, moisture damage, and extreme heat. When wood swells and then contracts, it will cause it to change shape and crack. Again, if your fence is old, it might be difficult to find wood that will match well with your fence.
Rotted Wood
Wood is a porous material. When moisture from rain, ice, and melting snow seeps in, it can cause rotting from the inside. Rotted wood is irreversible and will cause your fence to become weak and even more susceptible to pest infestations. Many fence owners use sealants and moisture repellants to help the protect the wood but overtime the rotted wood will need to be replaced.
Loose Connections
As wood naturally swells and contracts, it will cause the nails and screws to become loose. Moisture will also cause the nails and screws to rust and lose their grip in the wood which will eventually make the wood break free.
Missing Fasteners
Nails, wood screws, and metal fasteners are all essential components that help keep a fence together. Therefore, when any of those elements fall out for various reasons and ends up missing, your fence will lose some of its strength and integrity.
Too Much Money
You’ll know that it’s time to replace your fence when it becomes too expensive to fix. If the combined amount of money that will be necessary to fix your fence is the same or more than the amount it would take to replace it, then you should go ahead and start from scratch with a new fence.
