When deciding to fence in your property, there can be many decisions you have to make before you finally have the perfect fence. After an inspector surveys your residential property, you will be faced with the choices of fencing materials. While all fences have their pros and cons, there are two fences that offer affordability, low maintenance, and protection for your family: chain link fences. But which type of chain link fence is right for your home? Let’s take a look at both galvanized and vinyl coated chain link fences.
Galvanized Chain Link Fences
There are actually two types of galvanized chain link fences: galvanized before weaving (GBW) or galvanized after weaving (GAW). These fences are applied with their galvanized coating before or after being woven or welded. This coating helps to protect your chain link fence from rust. A fence that is galvanized before welding or weaving are more expensive but will last longer and are more durable. They are harder to find and a majority of chain link fences available today are galvanized after weaving or welding. Each of these galvanized finishes provides the same rust protection and the same finishes.
Vinyl Coated Chain Link Fences
Vinyl coated chain link fences are one of the best fences on the market. These fences are actually galvanized chain link fences coated with vinyl for extra protection. This type of chain link material is often used in lobster fishing pots because it is so durable. They are typically available in black, green, and white to give you curb appeal options. They are a more expensive option than a traditional galvanized fence but they last longer.
Welded versus Weaved
Not all chain link fences are created equally. Both vinyl coated and galvanized fences are made of the same base material and assembled the same way. Woven chain link fences take pieces of steel and bend and thread them together. The pieces are not connected in any other way and this type of weaving creates the traditional chain link fence. Welded chain link fences are more durable than woven ones. The pieces of this fence are woven together and welded. Each section can be put together and welded or two sheets are pressed and welded together. While welded fences are more durable, they are more expensive than woven fences.
