Fall has arrived, and with it comes cooler weather and the promise of winter over the horizon. During this season, there is some important fall fence maintenance you should perform to keep it in top shape until next spring. What kind of maintenance your fence needs depends on what kind of fence it is and what material it’s made of.
Wood Fence
Wood fences require the most maintenance of any fence type, and fall is a critical season to make sure this maintenance gets done before the winter hits. Since wood is the only type of fence material that’s organic, it’s significantly more susceptible to damage and degradation. During the fall, you should check your wood fence for damage, mold, mildew, rot, and other issues that require maintenance and repair. Once the fence is clear of mold, mildew, and rot and all damage has been repaired, it’s time to wash your wood fence if you haven’t already. A power wash on low pressure will do a lot to clear off any dirt or debris on your fence. Once that’s complete, you can choose to stain your fence for an elevated aesthetic. As a protective medium, varnish should be applied to your wood fence.
Vinyl Fence
A vinyl fence doesn’t need a lot of maintenance the way a wood fence does, but it should still go through inspection, maintenance, and repair in the fall season. Just like with any fence, inspect the perimeter for damage, loose areas, and other vulnerabilities that need to be repaired. Once the fence has been inspected, you can clean it with a mild soap or diluted dish detergent and rinse it down with a hose nozzle or power washer on low pressure. That’s all vinyl fences really need to stay in optimum shape.
Metal Fence
Your metal fence is most likely powder coated, which is great for maintaining the fence and keeping it in good condition over the course of many years. Your perimeter inspection should be looking for loose hardware, damaged powder coat, and other vulnerabilities. Once you have found and addressed all of the issues through repair and maintenance, you can give the fence a good cleaning. Similar to vinyl fencing, you can simply wipe the fence down with a mild soap or diluted dish detergent and rinse it with a hose nozzle or power washer on low pressure. Be very careful to keep the pressure low so that you don’t damage the powder coat.
