To give your wood fence the longest life possible, you must clean it. Wooden fences are notorious for breaking down after a few years of neglect. With proper upkeep, your fence will last for much longer.
Take a Brush to It
Wood that remains outdoors over time will need to be scrubbed to remove any moss, mold, or debris. Use a wire brush so you can use less pressure and avoid tarnishing your paint job. The wire brush will effectively loosen and grime that has built up over time.
Rinse with Your Hose
The next step is to rinse off the grime with your hose. If you have a high power setting, this is a great time to use it. You want to rinse every inch of your wood fence with the hose to remove any stains and leftover debris. These spots will need more focused attention if you still have stains or debris after rinsing your wood fence.
Try Using a Cleaning Solution
Now for the important part: cleaning the wood fence with a cleaning solution. There are several wood cleaners on the market that are effective and quite easy to use. Make sure to follow the directions and take your time. If you would rather make a solution at home, all you need to do is mix vinegar and water with a bit of baking soda. Spray whatever cleaning solution you chose all over the wood fence. Then use the brush to scrub your fence clean.
If You Power Wash, Do It Gently
Do not fret if you do not own a power washer or power washing attachment. Power washing is very effective at cleaning fences, but if used at too high a pressure, it will cause irreversible damage to a wood fence. Do not power wash at more than 25 Psi and stand a few feet back from your fence. If you are without a power washer, simply rinse your fence with the hose again. This will remove the soap and any grime you finally dislodged. If you are unsatisfied with the appearance of your fence after cleaning it, it may be time to get a new one.
