Although we have told you in the past to avoid hanging plants on your fence, there are some vines your fence won’t mind. These types of vines depend on which type of fence you have. So now that we have talked about vines to avoid having near your fence, it is time to talk about some more fence-friendly vines and which fences they go best with.
Wooden Fences
While most vines do not mix well with wooden fences, there are some vines that will give your wooden fence that classic look. The safest vines for wooden fences are annual, non-woody vines. These vines’ stems will wrap around your wooden fence but won’t cause the structural damage woody vines would. These vines can be guided around fence posts or along support beams, which will provide them with plenty of light. These vines should be removed at the end of their growing seasons. Annual vines are airier than most woody vines and do not trap moisture between the plant and fence. Unlike other vines, they do not provide much privacy but they do produce flowers that are vibrant in color and sweet in fragrance.
Vinyl Fences
Unlike other fences, vinyl fences are made of a hardy material that can withstand a lot of abuse when it comes to fences. Because these fences are durable, they do well with climbing vines, which can enhance privacy. Coral honeysuckle or clematis are both perennial vines that can climb over your vinyl fence. These vines also grow very quickly and can span the height of your fence in a single growing season. While woody vines do not have an effect on vinyl fences, they do trap moisture against your fence, which can cause algae and feed bugs. While algae doesn’t stick to your fence, bugs can cause problems by borrowing into your fence.
Aluminum Fence
Aluminum fencing naturally provides a beautiful foundation for your “living fence.” Wisteria, climbing hydrangea, and other strong woody vines might overwhelm other fences but are no match for your aluminum fence. These plants can provide full coverage in the growing season as well as adding color and aroma to your space.
Your fences doesn’t have to be devoid of life completely. But before you plant any vines around your fence, make sure you are not choosing an invasive species or a plant that is not right for your fence. For more information on beautifying your fence, check out our weekly blog!
