A residential fence is an excellent addition to your property’s appearance, but it is also essential for keeping unwanted visitors out of your yard. Wild animals can cause damage to your lawn and garden, but they may also be dangerous for your kids or pets. Certain animals need different fences to keep them out, so it’s important to know which fence is best for your property.
Rabbits
If you have rabbits digging around in your yard, a high fence won’t do much to solve the problem. Rabbits typically burrow underground, so you will need to cater to this by installing a deep fence. Dig at least a foot into the ground and set your fence inside the trench to keep burrowing animals out. You can also set your fence in poured concrete for additional stability and to ensure critters have no chance of entering your yard. Rabbits tend to chew on organic materials, so a wooden fence is not the best choice. Vinyl, mesh, or wire fences are best for keeping rabbits and other small animals out.
Deer
If you are more concerned with deer entering your backyard and eating your garden, you will want to install a tall fence. White-tailed deer can jump very high- about eight feet- so your fence will need to be at least this high. The good news is that any material will be effective against deer, so you can choose whichever material you prefer to match your yard and home.
Raccoons
Raccoons like to climb, so you will need an unclimbable fence to keep them away from your garden and trash cans. Raccoons are one of the hardest pests to keep out, as they are small, lack fear of lights and noises, and can climb almost anything. However, a good way to protect your yard is by lining the top of your wooden or vinyl fence with wire or slick material that makes it difficult to climb. Raccoons and other small animals like to walk along the top of fences, but a few plastic or metal spikes at the top of your fence will deter them from entering your property.
