Even the most whimsical, aesthetically pleasing, and strategically arranged backyard can have its peaceful atmosphere destroyed by road noise. Fortunately, there are several things you can do to reduce this annoying noise. While it is impossible to block it completely, you will find that dulling it will allow you and your loved ones to enjoy your backyard space.
Fences To Cancel Noise
A solid wood fence can do wonders for blocking out unwelcome noise from your backyard. Masonry walls made of concrete, brick, and stone are also incredibly effective. Regardless of material, a good noise blocking fence follows several design rules. If you are constructing a fence or other structure strictly for the purpose of blocking out road noise in your backyard, make sure that the fence has no gaps, as gaps allow sound wave through.
Utilize Vegetation
Barriers made of natural plants provide visual interest that built structures cannot provide, however, they require more maintenance and are not often an immediate solution. To block out intermittent noise, a single row of shrubs or trees may do, but to block out more insistent road noise you will need multiple layers of greenery. It will need to be so dense that there are no gaps which the annoying noise of the road can easily travel through to your backyard.
Water Features Are An Option
Sometimes, due to the size and shape of your backyard or local regulations, constructing a new fence or other physical barrier is not possible or preferable. In these situations, consider countering the noise with a beautiful water feature that makes more serene and enjoyable noise. Running water can drown out mild to moderate road noise and make your backyard enjoyable. Be sure to put it close to your home or outdoor seating area. As this water feature will be closer to you than the road noise, it will become the dominant noise you hear and help to drown out any annoying external sounds.
