Spring is almost here, making it the perfect time to clean your wooden fence! After a cold winter with snow and ice, your residential fence likely needs a good cleaning and power washing to look brand new again. Continue reading for a few steps to clean and revive your wood fence this spring!
Detergent
Start your fence washing project by cleaning with detergent. Start with a section at one end of your fence, and wet the area thoroughly. Before using detergent, be sure to spray down trees, plants, and soil surrounding the section to prevent the soap from damaging the foliage. After this step, you’re ready to turn the pressure washer’s detergent tank on and apply. Remember to start from the bottom and work your way up to avoid streaking. Let the detergent settle for 5-10 minutes, and add more water to areas that start to dry. For stains and dirty spots that aren’t coming off, simply use a rotating scrub brush to remove the stains.
Rinse
When it’s time to rinse the detergent, use a low to medium pressure spray pattern. Wood fences are softer than other materials, and high pressure could cause damage to the fence. Switch the detergent tank off, and press the trigger to make sure all remaining detergent is gone. When using a pressure washer, you want to work from the top down to remove the detergent. It’s crucial to work in sections, as applying detergent to your entire fence at one time before rinsing will result in the soap being absorbed by the wood.
Paint Or Sealant
After allowing your fence to dry for at least 48 hours, you should apply paint or a seal to protect the wood from sun or wind. This part of the process is completely up to you, as you can choose to paint your fence with a clean, bright color, or choose to use a sealant that allows the wood grain to show through. After this step, your fence will look brand new and ready for spring!
