Spring is finally in the air! As the weather warms up and the official start of the new season is just a few weeks away, it’s time to start preparing your fence for spring. Continue reading for tips on how to clean your wooden, aluminum, or vinyl fence!
Wood Fence
If you have a wooden fence, you will need to put in some work to make it ready for spring. Wood is a porous material, which means that organic growth can seep into your fence. This requires a combination of a cleaning solution and heavy-duty washing to ensure your fence is clean and lasts a long time.
You can make your own cleaning solution with either bleach or white vinegar in water. When using bleach, make your mixture with a 1:5 bleach to water ratio, and when using white vinegar, make your mixture with a 1:1 vinegar to water ratio. Start by soaking rags in the cleaning mixture, then scrub the wood up and down. Be sure to allow the mixture to seep into the wood for a deep clean, then blast the fence with a power washer.
Vinyl Fence
Cleaning a vinyl fence won’t take as much maintenance, as vinyl repels the intrusion of mold, so you don’t have to worry about a deep clean. However, all fences get dirty and should be wiped down as the harsh winter weather dies down. Renting a power washer is a smart decision, as it helps to eradicate organic growth and dirt from your fence. However, you can clean the fence on your own with some time and the homemade cleaning solution listed above.
Aluminum Fence
An aluminum fence requires the least amount of maintenance, and are the best choice for homeowners who like the style and don’t want to worry about cleaning their fence. Aluminum fences are very durable, and organic materials are not able to infiltrate the material or cause damage. You may be able to leave your fence alone without any maintenance, but if you want to make your fence squeaky clean, give it a quick wash with the white vinegar cleaning solution mentioned above.
