Even if you aren’t quite ready to let go of the summer warmth yet, fall is rapidly approaching. Now that it is officially fall (according to the calendar, not the humidity!), it’s time to prepare your fence for fall and winter with fall fence maintenance. How can you make sure that your fence is ready for leaves, wind, and snow?
Wooden Fence? Try Waterproofing
If you own a wood residential fence, you are probably familiar with the dangers of moisture accumulating on and around your fence. Before rainy fall days and snowy winter days, take advantage of early fall to put on a fresh coat of waterproof paint, wood stain, or waterproof sealant. By touching up your wood fence during fall fence maintenance, you can make sure that your fence won’t suffer from any warping, rotting, or infestations during the fall and winter seasons.
Any Fence? Look For Potential Hazards
If you have a wooden fence, check around your fence for any materials that could lead to decay or rotting. Piles of leaves, wet dirt, and yard debris around your fence can all hold on to moisture and transfer it to your wood fence. You want the area around your fence to be completely clear, not just during fall fence maintenance, but all throughout the season. After a rain or snow, the ground and fence needs to be able to dry out quickly and evenly to prevent rotting.
Regardless of your fence material, you should keep your eyes peeled for any potential hazards near your fence. Are there overgrown tree limbs or branches that are directly over your residential fence? Are there any diseased or dead tree limbs of branches near your fence? These will all be subject to the heavy weight of ice and snow during the winter and winds during fall days, so take care of them now. If they fall on your fence, you might be looking at more than just a couple minor repairs.
