Wood fences provide a pocket-friendly way to expand your living space. They also allow you to create the ideal setting for entertaining guests and loved ones and enjoying the outdoors during the warmer months. While this is true, wood fences can take a beating over time and deteriorate beneath the sun, wind, and all types of inclement weather. When you seal a fence you help to prolong its life, and so much more. Below some of the best stains so you know what to do when it’s time to seal a fence.
Solid Fence Stains
These stains generally last about three years. If you are alright with using a product that will cover the wood grain and you don’t want to have to go through the process of reapplying a seal yearly, this is an excellent option. However, as these stains are opaque, they have many of the same flaws that paint does. They can peel, crack, and chip over time under constant exposure to varied weather conditions.
Semi-Transparent Fence Stains
These stains allow some of the natural wood grain to peek through. These make them ideal for cedar or other types of wood with a gorgeous natural finish. They are not as weather resistant as solid stains, however, and will need to be reapplied every two years.
Clear Deck And Fence Stains
These stains contain little or no pigment and water repellents. If your primary concern is showcasing the natural wood grain of your fence, choose this type of stain. They need to be reapplied yearly. It is also important to note that even with yearly reapplication, eventually, your fence will still turn gray. While many of these stains contain ultraviolet inhibitors which can help to extend the life of your fence, it will be a matter of years before the sun eventually takes its toll.
